Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the human form of life is a unique opportunity because of its developed intelligence. Unlike lower species, humans have the capacity to look beyond material happiness and distress to enquire about the Absolute Truth and achieve ultimate liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
The Human Prerogative for Inquiry
Human intelligence is specifically designed for the pursuit of spiritual knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while animals are driven by instinct, humans should use their developed condition to endeavor for salvation and understand the higher hierarchy of living beings.
- Human intelligence is there to enquire about the Absolute Truth. So they have got better developed consciousness or intelligence than the lower animals. So that higher intelligence should be utilized for enquiring about the Absolute Truth.
- There is no use trying to counteract them (happiness or distress). The best thing is that one should endeavor to achieve salvation, and this prerogative is given only to man because of his developed condition of mental activities and intelligence.
- Superior to worms and snakes are animals that have developed intelligence. Superior to animals are human beings, and superior to them are ghosts because they have no material bodies. Superior to ghosts are the Gandharvas, and superior to them are the Siddhas.
The Divine Source of Intelligence
The development of intelligence is not an accidental material process but is governed by Kṛṣṇa. Through His catur-vyūha expansions and His causal grace, He provides the living entity with the necessary cognitive tools to make progress toward Him.
- The Nagapatnis said, "By Your (Krsna's) expansion as the catur-vyuha - namely Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Aniruddha and Pradyumna - You are the cause of the development of mind and intelligence."
- By the grace of Krsna we are given a highly developed body and intelligence, but if we do not utilize them, why should He give them to us again.
- Living beings are proportionately endowed with intelligence in terms of their previous activities. All living beings are not equally endowed with the same quality of intelligence because behind such development of intelligence is the control of the Lord.
Education and Advancement of Qualities
Real education is defined as the development of spiritual intelligence. By practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness, a person naturally develops divine qualities and gains a taste for spiritual happiness that far exceeds any material enjoyment.
- Education means to develop the intelligence. That is education.
- Advancement in Krsna consciousness involves developing the qualities of truthfulness, cleanliness, mercy, gravity, intelligence in spiritual knowledge, simplicity, material opulence, fame, forgiveness, and control of the mind and the senses.
- By Krsna consciousness, we shall gradually develop our intelligence, real intelligence. Then we shall naturally like to enjoy that spiritual happiness. And as we make progress and get taste of spiritual happiness.
Consequences of Misusing Developed Intelligence
Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that failing to use our intelligence to change our consciousness and understand Kṛṣṇa is a great loss. This buddhi is meant for liberation, and if it is not used for this purpose under the direction of the ācārya, we risk remaining entangled in the miserable conditions of birth and death.
- That intelligence (why to accept repetition of birth, death, old age disease and so many miserable conditions) can be developed in human form of life, and if we do not do, then the same example: just you use the sandalwood for burning purpose.
- In the human form of life, when one's intelligence is developed, one should change his consciousness by trying to understand Krsna. Then one can be liberated.
- Simply you require little intelligence. That intelligence is developed through the instruction of acarya.
Conclusion
In summary, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that developed intelligence is a sacred trust meant to lead the soul back to Godhead. Whether used to inquire into the Absolute Truth or to cultivate divine qualities, human buddhi finds its highest fulfillment only when directed toward Kṛṣṇa. Misusing this gift for material ends is compared to burning sandalwood for fuel—a tragic waste of a rare and valuable resource. Ultimately, by following the instructions of the ācārya, the living entity can harness this intelligence to achieve eternal liberation and spiritual bliss.
